Achievements & News 2009-2010 was a great year for St Ursula's! Congratulations to all who took part in many activities throughout the school year 2009-2010; * The 5th Green Flag! Transport was the theme for our most recent green flag and the aim was to have 60% walking EVERY day so WOW meant Walk on Weekdays.By June, amazingly almost 60% of the children were walking on Wednesdays and a further 25% were parking away from the school and striding the rest of the way. On March 25th, the Mayor of Waterford, John Halligan, raised our 5th Green Flag making us the first school in Waterford to have been awarded 5 Green Flags!Sincere thanks to the entire Green Committee and to all pupils, parents, staff and friends for their enthusiasm, commitment and hard work during the year. * Well done to our Gaelic Football team who participated in the Cumann na mBunscoil League last October. * Congratulations to St. Ursula's Senior basketball team who competed in the Primary Schools Basketball Competition on March 9th * Our 3rd and 4th Class soccer squad had a successful year, initially coming 1st and 2nd in the FAI Futsal Indoor 5-a-side Interschools competition in November and qualifying for the County Finals against the winners of Pool B. Congratulations also to our senior soccer squad who competed in the Jack Kennedy Memorial in Kingfisher on March 22nd. * Well done to the participants of the Waterford Primary Schools Cross Country event in September. St. Ursula's came home with the cup for Best Overall Girls School! In April our girls competed in the Waterford City Primary Schools Sports and again a super performance was given by all. * At the beginning of May St. Ursula's received the fantastic news that we had been awarded the 'Discovery Science Award of Science and Maths Excellence' for the third year in a row! * For the LAMDA examinations this year on May 12th the two 4th classes each performed 2 poems for the Choral Speaking exam while 21 5th and 6th class girls took individual exams in the Speaking of Verse and Prose-well done to all! *St Ursula's is very pleased to have pupils from different continents who are integrating very well in our school and add to our understanding of their cultures. During the year, Mayor John Halligan hosted an event to welcome new communities to Waterford and a special event was hosted by Mount Sion Cultural Centre to celebrate International Africa Day on May 25th. *The gardening club has been very busy this year in the school gardeb and well done to all as every class has planted something! *From April 26th - 30th four professional musicians came to give a music workshop to 35 5th class students which culminated in a 30min concert performance for the parents and other students in the school. In June the children travelled to the National Concert Hall to take part in a concert and it was an excellent opportunity for the students to enjoy a wide range of musical experiences. *A special mention must be made of Jordan (5th class) who is a great kickboxing enthusiast and competed in the WAKO 2nd European Kickboxing Championships for Juniors and Cadets and was placed 3rd in the U12 Weapons section for her ability with the numchuk - an amazing achievement.Well done Jordan! Highlights of recent years... 'Best Overall Girls School' title awarded to St Ursula's in April 2009 at the Waterford City and East Waterford Primary Schools Athletics competition Athletes who had great success at Munster and All Ireland level in Cross Country in 2009 Swimmers who won medals at a variety of Munster Swimming Galas and the All Ireland Finals in December Irish Dancing- Munster Championship U9 and qualification for the World Dancing Championships in Philadelphia 4th 5th and 6th class girls who took part in the LAMDA(London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) exams- the two classes which took the Choral Speaking Examination Grade 1 each gained a distinction Environmental Award Winners in the Acting Against Litter category of the Litter Photography competition winning €2,500! 2009 Discover Primary Science Award of Science Excellence- 5th and 6th classes 9 students were winning entrants in the Traveller Photography Competition run by Waterford City Council Well done to everybody who took part in the following; Schools Cross Country competition in Dungarvan, Waterford County Schools Competition, County Primary Schools Sports, St Ursula's Gaelic Football team who competed in the Cumann na mBunscoile 9-a-side League, Camogie Inter-schools Blitz, Interschool's Basketball Blitz, F.A.I. Schools 5-a-side competition and the girls who competed in the Jack Kennedy Shield
